IS OUR DEMOCRACY IN THE ALTAR READY FOR SLAUGHTER?
Kenya ushered democracy back in 1991 after the second liberation fight that made many political leaders , the church and civil societies and ordinary Kenyans to face it rough in the hands of an autocratic, authoritarian and despotic KANU regime under the late President Moi. The Democratic fruits and space we are enjoying now didn't come on a silver platter. When the late President Mwai Kibaki took over power back in 27th December 2002 , he vowed to restore the democracy in this Country as it was ment to be back in 1991 before the former KANU regime strangled it even after President Moi repealing section 2A of the constitution that paved was for pluralism. Kenyans enjoyed the real fruits of Democracy during the Kibaki regime. The freedom of speech, movement, association etc as stipulated in the bill of rights. What I am saying in short is , this debate on scrapping presidential terms is in bad state. It should not be surfacing in Kenya. It should be occupying hectares of space in Kampala, Kigali , Juba , Asmara , Brazzaville but not in the streets of Nairobi. Hon Salah Yakub was just the messenger and the owner of the message hasn't responded to it 24 hours later. I wonder what is he waiting. The more he isn't distancing himself from those distasteful and an insult to KENYA'S democracy , the more Kenyans are certifying that , that is his true position and threats of taking stern action in that legislator is ment to distract Kenyans. The Legislator is innocent and a contingent of food aid should be snaking itself to Fafi Constituency inorder to feed his constituents after doing a good job. He needs to be handsomely rewarded and not being punished.
If that bill by Hon. Salah Yakub sees the light of the day in the floor of the National Assembly , the beneficiary here will be President Ruto. He may distance himself from this narrative but deep down his heart , he us clapping. This is Africa and the reason why former President Uhuru Kenyatta left an indelible mark in people's hearts both his friends and his adversaries is he did what many African presidents saw as an insult to them. Uhuru relinquishing power at the age of 61 years ??? How?? Why?? This is something which irked Ugandan president Museveni's son Muhoozi. He couldn't fathom how former President Uhuru Kenyatta obeyed Kenya's constitution. He did it because he is a true democrat. Even when COTU sec. Gen Francis Atwoli said that President Uhuru Kenyatta is too young to retire, UHURU responded by telling him that , in his mind , the issue of extending even a second in State House after his term come to a close and true to his word , that is exactly what he did. Today , former President Uhuru Kenyatta was part of the team that was recommended by AU to midwife peace between Ethiopian goverment and Tigray People Liberation Front (TPLF).
Kenya is a paragon of virtue in the Horn of Africa and the great lakes region as a haven of real democracy. Malawi is moving closely with us because, if you remember very well , the Country's supreme court overturned the victory of the then President Peter wa Mutharika elections victory and ordered for a repeat election which opposition leader Lazarus Chakwera won. The other nations in the Horn of Africa and great lakes region are manned by autocrats and dictators. Look close to us in Uganda , Rwanda , Ethiopia , South Sudan , Rwanda to mention but a few. Is Kenya , through dictatorship of the National Assembly planning for us to follow that path? A path of darkness that blanketed this Country for 24 years between 1978 - 2002? This is the political litmus test President Ruto and his regime are facing amid a litany of crisis it is currently facing. The reaction of Kenyans yesterday towards this issue of removing the presidential term is proofed that the Country is not heading in the right direction and Kenya Kwanza Alliance should recollect itself and ensure their mind is well engaged before putting their minds into gear. Some utterances which are out of excitement are dangerous and can put this Country is a very precarious situation.
Our constitution is very clear and even before we ushered the new constitution back in August , 2010 . The previous constitution was very clear that the presidential term limits are 2 , 10 years. Anyone proposing something different from this is a despot and he/she has no moral authority to lecture us on matters autocratism and authoritarianism. Hon Salah is from Somali community where , ethnic autocratism where clanism is deep rooted and always make unpopular political decisions on behalf of their people even without consulting them. No wonder you ask yourself , this counties in the northern frontier districts are given huge amount of funds by the commission of revenue allocation (CRA) but their leaders absolutely do nothing. Their legislators receive millions of shillings for Ng CDF but , even with their sparse populations , they don't deliver robust services to them. To them , the word democracy doesn't exist. That's why , I wasn't shocked by those utterances by Fafi Constituency MP.
As Kenyans , the only cardinal responsibly we are left with is to JEALOUSLY guard our democracy. We know those people who are remnants of a despotic and autocratic and authoritarian Regime that ruled Kenya through an iron fist cannot be in the forefront to guard something which is alien to them. That's why , even when Democracy is placed in the altar to be slaughtered , they will be in the forefront to provide knives and participate in strangling it. Irrespective of which political divide you are , the statement on removal of presidential term limits and capping it at 75 years is like a snake that enters your house at night. Don't think because that snake dons the colours of the political party you support it will spare you. No!!! Infact , you may suffer more than its perceived and real and known enemies. Those who tasted the KANU regime under President Moi should be the ones taking the centre stage in telling and warning us of what is in the offing. Danger is lurking AHEAD and it is time we act or the acts that Authoritarianism will have on us will make is wail and cry uncontrollably.
This is a very good piece, just like your previous articles. Only one concern; please find yourself an editor or proofread your articles before posting....the grammatical and spelling mistakes gives the articles almost a bitter taste.
