NO NEED OF THREATS; KENYANS ARE JUST MAKING A COMMUNIQUE TO THEIR GOVERNMENT AND LEADERS.
This afternoon , I have seen a video clip of Uasin Gishu County commissioner Dr Edison Nyale threatening chiefs and their assistant chiefs for not working hard in mobilizing residents in their respective locations and sub locations to attend the Jamhuri Day celebrations that took place yesterday at Kapsoya secondary school ground. From that video , the County Commissioner looks and sounds someone who is agitated, irritated and bitter. Wananchi waliususia mkutano wa Mtemi Bokono. Hivyo basi , Mtemi hakufurahishwa na Jambo Hilo hata kidogo. At the same time , the Governor of Uasin Gishu Hon Jonathan Bii aka Koti moja was present and from his end , he accused the ward co-ordinators for failing to mobilize residents to attend those celebration. It is hilarious to see , the administrative and political wings are blaming people who ought not to be blamed. Days are gone when the Chiefs act was being used effectively in this Country. We in the new century and generation. You cannot apply the 19th century reasoning to solve the 20th century problems. It is hard.
Again, if it was a political rally , I believe that Kapsoya secondary school ground would have been full to the brim. Why??? Politicians would have used their wallets to mobilize the residents and even ferry others from neighbouring counties to reinforce the numbers there so that, it would be seen that , truly, the political elites who had convened that rally are popular and that , their organization and mobilisation skills are top notch. If the County Commissioner wasn't in a position to rally his Deputy County Commissioners (DCCs) , Assistant County Commissioners ( ACCs) , Chiefs and Ass. Chiefs to mobilize the locals to attend yesterday's Jamhuri Day celebrations, the Governor would have done it very comfortably. Yes!! The administration may fail but the political wing of that County would have saved the face of those celebrations which, from the agitation of Dr Nyale , it was just an yawning ground that during his speech, the County Commissioner was in competition with his echo but not applause from the multitude of residents who had attended that ceremony.
When Kenyans lose trust and confidence with their leaders , this is exactly what happens. Chiefs and Ass. Chiefs, who form a very vital role as National Government Administrative Officers ( NGAOs) , should not be blamed for that and the CC in this case should stand guided. Infact, he is administratively incorrect. Chiefs are very important people in the location and their roles cannot be ignored. Just like the wazee wa nyumba kumi and community health volunteers , whose roles are a cog in the execution of both County and national governments , I believe Kenyans can attest, chiefs and their assistants can't be wished away. Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua the other day opined that , the government will look into the welfare of chiefs and their assistants and to an extent where, chiefs will be armed and additional administration police officers to be added to them. On the other hand , an agitated County Commissioner is threatening to sack them. Before he dies so , he ought to ask himself, why did residents of Uasin Gishu County and most particularly those around Kapsoya secondary school boycotted that event? Was it planned or spontaneous? definitely, it is spontaneous. Kenyans are hungry and angry. The cost of living has pushed them hard in the corner and majority are in the periphery of life.
Uasin Gishu County isn't the only County where residents showed the Jamhuri Day celebrations a wide berth yesterday. Many , especially sub Counties where this ceremonies were going on , wanjiku was busy engaging in her usual errands of the day inorder to eke a living. Those who were smart enough to attract a small number of people, they had to give wanjiku who was president a bottle of soda, bottled water and a loaf of bread. Those who took a back seat and wait for wanjiku to attend the ceremony in which back in her mind and the culture that has cropped in this country of handouts , found themselves in a similar situation Dr Nyale , the Uasin Gishu County commissioner found himself. The seed that political elites planted of entrenching the culture of handouts inorder for citizens to attend their political rallies is nor extending in national ceremonies. At Nyayo stadium, the National Government had to use carrots in the form of promising free scholarship from Arizona state University inorder to address a considerable number of people to fill the stadium. During the Mashujaa day at Uhuru gardens, the government was left with an egg on its face after majority of Kenyans boycotted this ceremony and empty chairs were more than those in attendance.
It is high time the government to go back to its factory settings. There is no way, 7 million plus Kenyans can vote for it but when it comes to national holidays which are ment to be cerebrated across the Country, the very Wanjiku give them her back? There is something going terribly wrong somewhere. It means , even on matters that the citizens must be getting involved in the governance of this country especially through public participation, wanjiku must be bribed to attend. This is heartbreaking and that's how a Country is lost. The bond between the government and those governed must be reinvigorated through social, political and economic policies that are creating a conducive environment for the citizens to thrive and lowering cost of living and not necessarily bribing the citizens to attend it's events.
