WHY THINGS WON'T BE ROSY GOING FORWARD?
When Morgan Heritage's family Gramps Morgan looked at what his fellow Jamaicans are going through especially in Kingston, he summed it up that there is nothing to smile for. Yes!! Life was unbearable, desolate and extremely hard. The cost of living had skyrocketed to astronomical levels. The government which could have stepped in to solve the problem became the problem itself. Here in Kenya, we cannot afford to hide our heads in the sand abd assume everything tfine. There is nothing to smile about and those few who are affording to smile are the political elites and any hoi polloi doing it is just feigning a smile. Feigning is the best word to use because, the 100 days since this new administration was sworn in has been a hell of time. The many things which were promised inorder to reduce the cost of living has turned to be black smoke which is billowing in a spiral manner in all corners of this Country.
Kenya's economy is nose diving in an alarming rate. This is something we can't lie ourselves on because, as things are going , the cost of living has skyrocketed , the strength of our Kenya shillings against the dollar is below par , many parts of the Country are experiencing biting drought and famine. The government austerity measures have just been another political rhetoric which isn't adding value. The Orwellian principle is at play and the ordinary Wanjiku is now left is desolate situation wondering where to start and go. We ushered the year 2023 yesterday and many Kenyans feel , this year will be their annus anibillis (the year of disaster) especially economically. The many subsides which were effected by the previous administration have been vacated with no iota of mercy and good will. Hustler are now taxed heavily by the regime which before elections accused the former of instituting taxes which were painful yet they are even struggling hard to put a meal on their tables. In short, the Kenya Kwanza Alliance said unequivocally and authoritatively that , under the former President Uhuru Kenyatta goverment, Hustlers weren't in a position to buy a rope that goes for sh 10 inorder to hang themselves. At that moment, they promised their supporters of a Canaan where , they will live the best life and make merry all the time and access basic goods and other human wants will be easy like a bat of an eyelid.
As we speak now , hustlers are bitter , they are psychologically and emotionally disorganized. They are wondering what will happen next. That fear of unknown has enclipsed their whole being. As time ticks , they are edging closer to taking their children back to school. With no subsides on school fees , things will be very difficult for them. They are about to hit the Waterloo and by that time , I don't know what will happen to a majority of them. Stress and depression has engulfed majority of Kenyans. The henious things and acts as are receiving everyday from various parts of this Country are disheartening. It sounds as if end time is nigh. All this is happening because, the economic situation a majority of Wanjiku are going through have pressed them hard in a corner and have no where to go. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is now the one which is running our economy. The late President Mwai Kibaki when he took power back in 2002 defied this Bretton Woods Institution. How it had managed to ravage Kenya's economy when KANU was in power under President Moi, Kibaki decided he will deviate from it. Former president Uhuru Kenyatta too defied them on many fiscal and monetary policies which the IMF was proposing to him as sticks inorder for Kenya to get loans to adjust its monetary and fiscal abnormalities. KENYATTA defied them on subsides and Kenyans can recall how Uhuru steered the ship under the turbulences of COVID 19. His subsides cautioned Kenyans to the detriment of the IMF.
Today, our economy is in the hands of this Bad Samaritan called the IMF . The structural adjustment programmes (SAPs) have ravaged Kenyans is a wrong way. IMF dictates the type and amount of food you eat , the kind of clothes you were , the mods of transport you take , the place you sleep on etc , that's what they are currently doing. So far , they lied to you they won't subsidize CONSUMPTION but they will subsidize PRODUCTION. So far , what has changed? Has the cost of living reduced? They told you that the government policy to do away with this subsides has helped the government to save , save what yet Kenya's purchasing power has reduced? The consumer price index (CPI) is in shambles. Kenya's are even skipping meals since they cannot afford breakfast, lunch and supper. The inflationary rate is all high but I was baffled to see the Treasury CS is still gambling with Kenyans lives. Word has it he is defying the many monetary and fiscal policies that will help reinvigorate our economy which the CBK Governor Dr Njoroge is coming up with. The Governor warned about this hustler fund they it will ravage the monetary policies the CBK had taken to arrest the biting inflation. The CS Treasury defied that red flag. Kenyans should brace for a tough year going forward. Things aren't easing anytime soon. I aren't becoming a pessimist who sees a glass as half empty instead of half full but time of being honest with each other is now. Playing the proverbial politics of an ostrich where we continue burying our heads in the sand and imagine that danger has gone away won't help. The President's speech yesterday wasn't promising at all. It was full of political rhetoric rather than address the situation at hard. It sounds like he had no planefor us. More rhetoric from Monday to Monday. We need action and very soon , the Arab spring may spark in this Country. All the revolutions that have taken place in this World emanates from people struggling to fill their bellies.
An economy in the hands of IMF isn't promising at all. This are people you didn't vote for but they are now on top of things. Your goverment is only there to be seen and not to be heard. All the economic decisions they are making and implementing have to be ratified by the IMF. It is the IMF through stringent structural adjustment programmes which urged President Ruto to do away with subsides which were cushioning Kenyans. They say if you want to kill a dog , you give it a bad name. That's why this subsides which were effected by the previous regime have been labeled as sheer political policies which were aimed to achieve political favour from Kenyans. Really??? If it is so , why then is the cost of living higher than when those subsides were in place? It should be even lower but what Kenyans are experiencing is a totally different thing. Kenyans feel shortchanged and lied to. They cannot afford to sing the hatupangwingwi song. How can they do in on empty stomachs and pockets. The future is not luminous but full of darkness unless a miracle happens not from your goverment but IMF , the international Mother and Father. Happy new year!!!!!
