KENYANS SHOULD CELEBRATE SABA SABA WITH NOSTALGIA ; THE FUTURE IS LUMINOUS.
Down the memory lane , a day like today back in 1990 , Kenya's second liberation heroes staged a mega rally at Kamukunji grounds that sent shockwaves, panic and confusion in the KANU regime. President Moi and his acolytes had a very uncomfortable and disturbing day. The whole Security forces were deployed to crack down these politicians and their supporters who turned up to this meeting. There was a heavy cloud of tension and pandemonium which had enveloped the whole of Nairobi City. Even innocent Kenyans who were going on with their usual daily errands found themselves in a fix. For every 5 citizens in the city , there were 10-15 police officers. The venue where the meeting was taking place , a contingent of anti riot police forces drawn from the dreaded GSU and RDU were present combing Shauri Moyo , Eastleigh and its evirons like no one business.
Moi was always paranoid. He feared his citizens who he ruled with an iron fist. As is usual , despotic, autocrat , kleptocratic and authoritarian are always afraid when citizens rise up to fight for their rights. President Moi and his partners in crime translated the push by the church, civil societies , lawyers and opposition leaders who opposed his high handedness goverment as a threat to his Kalenjin community first and second his leadership. So , he converted Kenya I to a Police State. Fear was the currency of trade in the early 1990's. The dreaded Special Branch sleuths were all over. They combed ever social and economic places and the only place that took zero chances was in the political arena. Political Leaders like Raila Odinga , James Orengo , the late Martin Shikuku , Jean Marie Saroney , Paul Muite , Njeri Gathangu , Muturi Kigano , Gibson Kamau Kuria , clergies Bishop Alexander Muge and Rev Timothy Njoya , intellectuals Dr Willy Mutunga , Prof Anyang Ny'ongo , the late Katama Mkangi ,Mukaru Ng'ang'a etc. This are the people who tasted the iron claws of Moi. In the dungeons of Nyayo House and Nyati House went through henious and atrocious acts. There are those who were incarcerated in Kamiti and Naivasha maximum security prisons.
Kenyans lived with fear. The bill of rights was strangled and defiled and left to fight for its life. Media and freedom of speech, movement and expression was highly censored. Freedom of association was too censored. To hold a family gathering , you had to seek a clearance from your area chief and the OCS of the police station near you. Things were tough and that's why Kenyans are fearing the return of that kind of Regime through Ruto and Gachagua. They were the gate keepers and sympathisers of that regime and even took part in wrecking havoc to those who questioned and opposed Moi regime. Ruto was a member of the dreaded KANU youth militia Youth for KANU popularly known as YK 92. How can this Kenya Kwanza Alliance duo convince Kenyans that their names and Democracy can feature in the same sentence? How can they convince Kenyans can uphold and help entrench Democracy in this Country? Kenyans from a distance especially those who were present during the despotic KANU regime that ran from 1978 to 2002.
In the whole of the East African Community , Kenya is a haven of Democracy. If you doubt me , look not further but Uganda , Tanzania , Burundi etc. This are Countries with pseudo democracy. They masquerades to be democratic on paper but in reality, they are dictatorial. Freedom of expression is highly regulated. In our neighboring countries , there is limited freedom of expression but there is no freedom after expression. Sad!!! Both social and mainstream media is highly censored by State machineries. There are some of the things you only post in your social media pages or if you are a journalist , pen it in a daily newspaper when you are in exile. Fact!!!
